Puerto Plata is the capital of the north coast of the island and was founded by Columbus on his second voyage. It is worth a visit to see the many historical landmarks such as the old fort; built to resist attacks from English and Dutch pirates and it is one of the first ones in America. You will see precious old amber with tiny insects caught inside the stone at the Amber Museum, the chocolate fabric and get a taste of rum at the Rum Factory. A walk though the old historical centre showcases many houses built in the Victorian and Colonial style and also the main Cathedral and the city square with a typical Victorian gazebo.
This lively city captures the spirit of the Caribbean and its impressions will stay with you forever!
