Puerto Plata is the capital of the north coast of the island and was founded by Columbus on his second voyage. It is worth a visit to see the many historical landmarks such as the old fort; built to resist attacks from English and Dutch pirates and it is one of the first ones in America. You will see precious old amber with tiny insects caught inside the stone at the Amber Museum, chocolate fabric and get a taste of rum at the Rum Factory.
Also, you will have the opportunity to visit the Cable Car which is one of the most popular attractions of the Puerto Plata area. The mountain Isabel de Torres towers over the city with its peak at an altitude of 2,555 feet (779 m) above sea level, giving visitors a breathtaking view of the city laid out below. Visitors can enjoy a beautifully landscaped botanical garden and a copy of the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro of Jesus Christ the Redeemer.
